Spotlight on Eli
This is our player spotlight series. Here we look to find out a bit more about out players and their football influences.
Next in our series is Eli, a regular on weeknights and weekends.
Could you tell us when you first got interested in football?
Honestly, I can’t even remember exactly when – it feels like football has always been a part of me. My parents used to say I never liked playing with dolls as a little girl; instead, I was always chasing a small ball around the house. I have fond memories of playing with my cousins in my grandma’s garden during summer holidays.
There were no football clubs or training classes available back then, so I never had the opportunity to properly learn or join a team. One of the first things I ever bought with my New Year’s gift was a football, but I could only play with wall inside our house and passing the ball with my dad. Still, the passion I had never disappeared – it stayed alive, waiting for its moment. And that moment finally arrived – when I was around 40.
Who has been the most influential person in your football life?
Growing up, I watched football constantly, and a few players completely captured my imagination. I fell in love with the way Ronaldo Nazário (R9) played—his movement with the ball felt like dancing. But in terms of a role model, Cristiano Ronaldo (R7) has always been the most inspiring to me. His work ethic, his passion, and his constant drive to improve made me believe that if you truly want something, you can achieve it with effort and determination.
Recently, I’ve started following women’s football more closely, and I really admire Aitana Bonmatí. I love how intelligent and creative she is on the pitch – her vision, control, and calmness under pressure are incredible.
They’ve all inspired me in different ways. R9 sparked my love for the beauty of football, R7 taught me to never give up, and Aitana reminds me that playing smart and with heart makes all the difference.
Is there any team that you support?
As far back as I can remember, the moment I saw the Red Devils – Manchester United – I fell in love with them. There was something magical about watching them play. They didn’t just feel like a team of superstars; they felt like a real team, united on and off the pitch. Even with so many big names, they always played for each other, and that truly inspired me.
That team spirit, the energy, the connection with the fans—I loved everything about it. Even though things haven’t been easy for them lately, my love for the team hasn’t changed. I’ll always support them, because of all the unforgettable moments and emotions I’ve experienced with them over the years.
Can you tell us about your most memorable times as a With Unity player?
One of my most unforgettable moments with With Unity was my very first day. Before training even started, I had a mix of excitement and doubt running through my head – voices telling me, “You’re almost 40,” “You don’t have any background in football,” and “What are you doing here?” But everything changed the moment I stepped onto the pitch and touched the ball for the first time. It felt like my dream was finally coming true.
That moment became even more special when I met Coach Joey and my teammates. From the very beginning, everyone was so welcoming and supportive. I never once felt like an outsider. Coach Joey made me feel seen and encouraged, always bringing positive energy and a clear plan to help us improve. He’s incredibly patient and thoughtful in how he coaches, and I truly feel lucky to have found With Unity.
More than just a football team, With Unity feels like a family—and that’s what makes every moment here so memorable.
What has been the best thing about playing as part of With Unity?
The best part of playing with With Unity is witnessing the power of football, especially when it brings women together. It’s amazing to see young women growing in confidence, improving their skills, and not being afraid to make mistakes. Even if they don’t know each other well, there’s always encouragement, support, and a real sense of unity.
Our coach plays a huge role in that. He supports every single player, whether you’re a total beginner or have years of experience. And beyond the game itself, I’ve made friends from all over the world and learned about different cultures, all while being part of the same team.
It reminds me that it’s never too late to chase your dream. That’s the magic of football—and the power of women coming together.
With Unity are part of a larger movement to encourage more and more females to play football. Do you feel this is something that is improving in Korea and worldwide, or is there still a long way to go?
Yes, absolutely. It’s improving, especially in Korea. Since I started playing football just a year ago, I’ve seen more girls joining teams and more tournaments being held. The energy around women’s football is growing fast, and it’s exciting to see.
Globally, women’s football is also gaining real momentum. Stadiums are filling up, more matches are being broadcast, and fans are showing strong support. This progress didn’t happen overnight. It’s thanks to the brave women who followed their passion, even when it wasn’t easy.
There’s still a long way to go, especially in terms of equal access and media coverage. That’s why teams like With Unity are so important—they create a supportive and inclusive space where women of all levels can grow, connect, and enjoy the game together.
What I love most about With Unity is that we’re all from different countries and cultures, yet we come together as one team. We support each other, grow together, and build real friendships through football.
So if you love the game, it doesn’t matter where you’re from, how old you are, or what level you’re at—just come and join us. You’ll be welcomed, have fun, learn new skills, and be part of something truly special.
Fantastic words Eli, and very powerful stuff. Thanks for your words.
